I saw low-budget Brit horror flick OUTPOST the other day, expecting nothing more than a contemporary zombie fight between grizzled mercenaries and Nazi zombies in the bunker they stumble across in Eastern Europe.

However, when the dialogue started talking about Nazi weird science and Einstein's Unified Field Theory, my HEX-detectors started twitching.

I'd recommend the film to HEX gamesmasters looking for ideas on a new way to possibly introduce zombies into their game. It's a stylish film (especially given its low budget), but the story doesn't really hold water - best watched for the atmosphere and weird science Smile

I've seen trailers for this movie, but figured I'd be lucky to catch it. Now I'll just have to try harder... Wink

Thanks for the review, Salem! Most rep-worthy...

I can second the recommendation. It's definitely worth checking out, even if just for the idea fuel.

And there I was looking for a movie this weekend, maybe another Hellboy marathon, and along comes this! Thanks very much. Rep for you.

Hope you all enjoy it. I'd be interested to know what you think of it, having gone into the film with a more 'realistic' idea of what to expect.

Just finished Outpost. Nice to see a few familiar faces in there - Tyres from Spaced, for one, the mercenary-in-charge for another. In fact, most of the cast seem to have been bit-part players from one British TV show or another in the past!

The MacGuffin itself is a beauty. Suitably ambiguous in its design and execution - simply stated "this machine does x". Perfect for Hex. If I were to adapt this for Hex, I'd have the final malfunction restore the Nazi supersoldiers and open an escape route for the surviving mercenaries and the academic. However, I'd love to run it straight as a one-shot for All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

Don't think enough was made of the room of bodies, though. The one that was shown moving in there was suitably creepy, though, and it was a fitting end for the escaping academic. I'd got him pegged as returning to his superiors, reporting that the machine was still fully functional and they could go ahead with phase 2... All under a Nazi swastika, of course.

The fact that the zombies start off as near-unstoppable, intangible, demons and become "just" unstoppable killing machines I would put down to the activation of the Machine - it might send ripples back and forward in time, affecting the abilities of the creatures. Or maybe I've watched too much Doctor Who.

Very enjoyable film, though. Being forewarned, I can say I find very few faults with it. Rep for you for the recommendation.

I like this justification for the seeming inconsistencies in the zombie's abilities!

It would allow the PCs to "kill" one or two, drag the bodies back in for examination. That, coupled with the cinefilms, should be enough to scare the crap out of them. Though that does sound a lot like the plot exposition of the first "Resident Evil" game.
