I think there is a good chance that the german SPACE: 1889 will be translated into english. _________________ http://ubiHEX.blogspot.com |

Thanks for sharing the news~
I amlooking forward to this. I have heard a lot about the setting, but never played the original. I get the feeling it will be a great fit for Ubiquity, though. _________________ Runeslinger

The Space:1889 world overcame the disability of a usable but not-that-great system. Ubiquity is actually a great fit for it.
Highlander Studios is doing both 15mm minis and 1:1200 scale ships too. The first test for a steam launch can be seen here. Several groups of 15mm figures are already done as well. _________________ - Daniel Potter (MYTHIC ERAS)

Oh man! You'll have to tell us how (hopefully) awesome it is when you've had a chance to give it a look through. _________________ - Daniel Potter (MYTHIC ERAS)

Are you holding the German version, or an English version...? _________________ Runeslinger

@Runeslinger: Die deutsche Version, natuerlich Sorry, but there is no English version (yet)!
@Mr. Potter: It is indeed awesome, as far as I can tell from skimming through! (Real life TM sometimes is a real female canine which screws with your agenda-for-the-week!)
As promised by the authors, the background content, taken from the original Space 1889, has been extended. Afaik, parts are from other GDW source books as well as brand-new material. As it is directed to a German audience, Germany and the Wilhelminism got more "Raum" (pardon the pun!), but the British still are the "default nation of choice". But - as expected with Ubiquity - you can make up characters of any nation, even Marians or Venusians, if your wish.
Btw, Earth and Mars got most space, but the other planets are decribed well enough to go adventuring in the jungles of Venus or the "twilight zone" of Mercury.
I like the interior art work very much, especially the character templates which have a feel of those "hand-coloured" period photographs. llustrations look a bit like period etching, "Ausgezeichnet!"
The cover picture is my least favorite piece. Nothing against the action scene, but I don't think it is especially well done (*wispering* it's the fellow with goggels and a "bend" revolver *wispering ends*. But that's just personal taste!
One thing I thought strange (although people new to the background would not miss it): In the vehicle section there are nice illus of airships and the like, but they are named generically small and large screw galley or kite. No Whisperdeath, Hullcutter or Fleetfoot But the again, I heard some wispering in the æther about a technical volume....
The next book will be the Venus volume! Can't wait!!!
PS: One thing weightens my heart. When will I play this? I am playing in a regular SR campaign, and are GMing fairly regular Old West HEX as well as a recently started AFO game! So many games to play, so little time...... |

Skimming through a friend's copy of Space 1889, I got the impression that there was actually quite a lot of text in it. The illustrations are few, compared to other RPGs. Being a sucker for fancy layout and excessive graphics, to me (mind you!) it looked a little boring, layout-wise. However, I haven't read any of the old books, nor have I had a chance ot read the new one yet, so I cannot comment on the content at all!
As a sidenote (and to further rumours and anxiety), the German publisher Uhrwerk has recently asked for translators (explicitly from German to English) on his boards. I wonder wich of Uhrwerk's books might be scheduled for publication for an English speakign audience... _________________ "I have wrought my simple plan

@Nur: The book is not filled to the rim with illustrations, indeed, about every fourth page (except for Equipment and area decriptions which have a higher count). There could be more, but I do not find it dull. The page background/margin has a nice, comfy-to-the-eye sepia parchment look, supposedly Marsian style.
I guess, the limitation in illustration is connected to price policy (Illustrators are expense! I remember someone at Uhrwerk whining at that!) and maybe space issues, too. The text size is somewhat smaller than in HEX. Could be because the authors wanted to put as much stuff into the book as possible without exceeding a certain page count. More content without price increase sounds good to me
But as you say, it's personal taste

Oh, and I thought the most known German phrases would be: "Halt! Ausweis!" and "Haende hoch!" from Hollywoods Instant German dictionary, especially in a HEX forum |

Thanks for the quick overview, GD.

Actually, in the original (English-language) core rulebook equipment section, they referred to the ships in the say way. It's just that we already had Sky Galleons and knew what they were _________________ - Daniel Potter (MYTHIC ERAS)

Did they now? My memory must have failed me here. I thought those nice colour templates sported the names. But then again, my first Space 1889 product was Sky Galleons (used), which may cause my faulty recollection by mixing stuff up
....which means: we definetely need a technical volume for the Ubiquity version!!! How else would the young generation be able to fully enjoy the technical wonders of Mars? |
