Howdy all,
As a doodler and passable artist, I like to draw stuff for no particular reason. One fun thing is to draw stuff and then see what people come up with for it. On a few other forums and in our gaming groups, we have done "design challenges" where we come up with a piece of source material or a topic, throw it out there and see what everyone can come up with for it. So, I thought I'd try it out here.
Below there is a picture that I would like any interested parties to create stats and perhaps even a bit of fluff about.
Enjoy yourself and I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with for my drawing.
Thanks, _________________ -Eli

Hey, we're a creative bunch! I think we need more challenges like this. Keeps the mind sharp. _________________ Just remember who’s standing in your way, remember every black day I ever stopped you and then—AND THEN—do the smart thing: let somebody else try first. |

Interesting idea for a challenge. I shall be taking part, but like others, I won't post anything till next week
EDIT: Perhaps we should have a 'Posting Day' where everyone can post their entries at about the same time? _________________ "Nazis. I hate these guys."

I had considered it, but I don't like to put people under the gun and I have no problem with ideas trickling in over time as folks get them or as new folks join up.
Does the weekend of August 30th sound good to those who have already expressed an interest. This is by no means a cut-off jus tthe deadline for the "challenge".
On other groups, the winner of the current challenge won the honor of setting the next challenge. How does that sound? _________________ -Eli

Sounds good, HC. In fact, I'll move this thread to the Contests section if you want. _________________ "Nazis. I hate these guys."

I'm all over this.
As small compensation for my sudden absence from GC'08, I'd like to post a complete mini-adventure/encounter her sometime this week.
Stay tuned!

Hey, whatever you want. The idea is to spark creativity and provide a whole slew of neat ideas, on a common theme, that folks can borrow from for their games. _________________ -Eli

Hey folks,
To all those who expressed an interest, and perhaps to all those who mighth ave missed the original post, just a reminder that August 30th is the veyr loose deadline (and I do mean LOOSE) for contributions for this challenge.
I am very eager to see what folks come up with. There seems to have been a good amount of interest, including the offer of a mini adventure/encounter from Reaperwolf.
Thanks all, _________________ -Eli

No stats yet, they'll have to wait. I may tweak the fluff below as well.
| Quote: | Expeditionary Force Log - Day 4
Temple Site Charlie
Temple Site Charlie is a startling contrast to sites Ack and Beer. Where the first two sites encountered were mostly ruins with, at best, a single intact building, Charlie appears to be completely intact. I believe this is down to both its site and its size. Sites Ack and Beer sit within small jungle clearings close to water, site Charlie sits on a large plateau, raised above the jungle canopy by several yards. No buildings sit closer than 200 yards from the edge of the plateau and only some hardy jungle creepers have made it above the plateau lip. The sides of the plateau are of smooth rock, pitted by runoff in places. Although the sides are steep, they are not so steep as to prevent vegetation from growing on them - what has stopped the growth is unknown.
Access to Charlie is via a series of ledges chiselled into the rock face. These form a series of rudimentary steps and are not cotemporaneous with the site buildings. A complete survey of the plateau will be undertaken at first light tomorrow. I believe we will discover the original means of accessing Charlie elsewhere around the plateau rim.
Camp has been established approximately 25 yards from the plateau rim with sentires posted. No signs of life up here as yet but you can't be too careful here.
Day 5 - Temple Site Charlie
Captain Strawbridge rigged a pulley system at the edge of the plateau at first light and we now have three of our motorcycles here with us. He's working on a more powerful system to raise up the landrover. A four-man team was dispatched on two of the motorcycles to complete a rapid survey of the plateau and to take a preliminary look at the temple complex proper. As we await their return, we are kitting out the first party to survey the nearest buildings.
The motorcycle party returned two hours later. There is a long, shallow ramp about a dozen yards wide on the far side of the plateau. It holds a paved road leading up to the main temple building and away down into the jungle where it runs straight towards another, larger temple complex in the distance. We know where our next target is! No reported signs of life. The scout team report a total of nine buildings, all mostly intact. Two straight rows of eight small, low, square buildings, 4 yards to a side, 3 yards tall, flat roof, sealed and locked stone doors either side of a larger step pyramid some 60 yards along each face. The pyramid is incredibly regular - 10 "steps" tall, each step 3 yards high and set back 3 yards from the edge of the one below. Very little ornamentation at first glance, each face decorated with intricate bas-relief depicting humanoid figures on closer inspection.
Our first survey party is ready. Myself, Captain Postlethwaite, Seargent Baker and four enlisted men. Strange. As we approach the first building there is obvious statuary around the temple site. This was not mentioned by the motorcycle party. Must bring this up with them when we return to camp tonight. There is also little in the way of figures represented in the bas-relief. There are defaced areas where figures *should* be. Sergeant Postlethwaite, our archaeologist and explosives expert, examined one of these statues. His report follows.
Subject: Humanoid Statue 01. One of thirty or so statues, approximately nine feet tall, carved from the same stone as the buildings at Temple Site Charlie. Statue is aesthetically Mayan in design, a human figure with an over-large masked head, similar to carvings found at numerous sites in South America. Sketch attached. This statue differs from the classical Mayan sculptures in that it is entirely free-standing and not attached to a plinth or building. Its location within the Temple Site Charlie is also not consistent with known sites in South America. Initial investigation around the base of the statue is unsettling. The statue has been recently placed - and placed carefully - onto the sparse grass that covers the plateau. Bent blades of living grass protrude from beneath the feet of the statue. Once Capt. Strawbridge has succeeded in raising the landrover I shall instruct the men to take one of these statues back to the drop site for transport back to Jerusalem Camp. Report Ends.
The men are clearly unnerved by these statues. I cannot be sure, but I do not think the statues we initially observed are in the same locations - or the same stance. Close examination of the first building's decoration shows that what appears at first to be defacement of the bas-relief is far more precise - the figures have been carefully removed. Sgt. Postlethwaite's measurements of both the bas-relief and the statue show that the figures in the bas-relief are the same height as the statuary. Curioser and curioser, said Alice.
The day's exploration has been cut short. Shots fired from the camp.
Day 5 - Night at Temple Site Charlie.
Cpt. S's generator is running well. The camp is well-lit and sentries have been posted. No trace of the "attacker" have been detected though a careful search in the area the men claimed to have seen the attacking force did turn up 3 bullets matching those shot by the men along with some unusual stone fragments. No footprints lead to or from the area.
0400. Woken by more gunfire. Several rounds fired towards Temple Site Charlie. The sentries in question claim to have seen several large figures approaching the camp. They resembled the statues we found when investigating the temple site. We will leave investigation of the area until first light. In the meantime, Sgt. P. is rigging some explosive charges in a perimeter around the camp. This appears to have hardened the resolve of the men, several of whom were voicing the opinion that we should be returning to Jerusalem.
Day 6 - Temple Site Charlie / Camp
First light - 0710. Investigation of the shooting incident at 0400 hours. Most disturbing. All rounds recovered and matched to the sentries' rifles. More stone fragments. About 20 yards from the site where the last round was recovered, a group of 7 statues stands facing the camp. We did not miss them during our scouting yesterday - the central statue straddles the tracks of one of the motorcycles.
Dispatched scouting party on motorcycles to survey the position of statuary around the plateau and Temple Site Charlie. They should be back in a couple of hours. Ordered Sgt. P and his team to rig charges around the group of statues nearest the camp. Not that I'm expecting them to move but then how could they have got where they are?
0800 - Explosions heard. Not from the statues btu from further across the plateau. Something must have happened to the scouting party. Cpt. S. has raised the landrover. We break camp and load as much as possible into the vehicle before moving around the plateau in the direction of the explosion. Two plumes of smoke are clearly visible. As we pull away from the camp site, the explosives Sgt. P. rigged around the statues detonate. No-one claims to know how they were triggered but the statues were reduced to rubble.
0820 - Proceeding towards the smoke. It is not on the plateau but along the road running down into the jungle. As we turn on to the road, the ground shakes. Several buildings visible at the distant site appear to *stand up*, towering over the jungle. Through field glasses, these "statues" are physically similar to the statues that now line the road at our backs, only much, much bigger.
0830 - Defensive formation. I'm packing this information up for Cpt. Strawbridge to return to Base Camp Jerusalem. He'll be taking the remaining motorcycle around the base of the plateau and retracing our route. I have a bad feeling about this. |
