Aesheba: Greek Africa
Written by: Robert J. Blake, Frank Mentzer, and Jeff O'Hare
Published by: New Infinities Productions, Inc. as one of their Fantasy Master game accessories. 96 pages.
Date of publication: 1987
Aesheba is an Africa-like island continent. The native inhabitants include bushmen-like tribes and citydwellers. There are also colonies founded by bronze-age Greek exiles. The colonies are just a single generation old, but they've already split up into four city-states. The two oldest attempt to reproduce Hellenic culture while the two newest come to terms with the native peoples in their own ways. Trade with outside world is pretty much limited to the Greek trading vessels that drop by at lengthy intervals.
The book provides a history of the continent, concentrating on the past thirty years, with a good summary of each city and the more powerful tribal nations. Capsule biographies of the most important residents of each area are provided. There's a foldout map included. This is a generic accessory, intended to be plugged into virtually any game system. There's no real magic system, for example, but there is a chapter discussing ancient African concepts of witchcraft.
Most of what's in this book could be plugged into a HEX campaign with no trouble at all. Call the Greek settlers Amazons, and the Africans Noble Savages, and you've got all you need to drop a party of HEX explorers into an unexpected brew of political and diplomatic intrigue.
Finding a copy of it may present a big problem, though. So far as I know, New Infinities went the way of the dodo right after publishing this, and 20 years is a long time. |
